DESCRIPTION:Significance and History \nThis culture is deeply rooted in an understanding of the human system’s connection to the Earth\, the Moon\, the Sun\, and various aspects of the Divine. This connection is also reflected in the timing and manner of our festival celebrations. \nNavratri\, meaning ‘nine nights‘\, begins the day after the new moon (Amavasya). The first nine days of the lunar cycle are considered feminine\, representing Devi\, the feminine aspect of the Divine. The ninth day\, known as Navami\, marks the end of this phase. The one-and-a-half days around the full moon are neutral\, while the remaining eighteen days are masculine in nature. Traditionally\, all worship up to Navami is dedicated to Devi during this feminine phase. \nThere are twelve such nine-day periods each year\, each focusing on a different aspect of the feminine Divine\, or Devi. The Navratri that occurs in October is the most significant\, as it is dedicated to Sharada\, the goddess of learning. This tradition places the highest value on learning\, a unique ability that distinguishes humans from other creatures. While other beings may be faster or stronger\, they cannot learn as humans do. DESCRIPTION:Significance and History \nDuring the festival of Diwali\, people light up their homes and commercial outlets. Lord Ganesh is worshipped for prosperity and welfare whereas Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped for wisdom and wealth. The festival usually falls in the months of November or October and is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama from 14 years of exile. In many parts of the country\, the festival is celebrated for five consecutive days. Undoubtedly\, it is the most famous Indian festival\, which is regarded as a celebration of life. In a few parts of the country\, the festival denotes the beginning of the New Year. Deepavali is a five-day festival that goes as mentioned below: \n\nThe first day denotes the arrival of the new financial year for most Indian businesses. The business class worships Goddess Lakshmi for wealth.\nThe second day is the day of cleansing. People take oil baths and wear new clothes.\nThe third day is the day of the new moon. DESCRIPTION:Significance and History \nThe festival of Bhai Dooj is celebrated across the country in a traditional way. On the occasion\, sisters make a seat for their brothers using rice flour. Once the brother sits on the seat\, a paste of vermillion\, dahi and rice is applied on the forehead of the brothers as a religious tika. \nThereafter\, the sister place a flower of Kaddu\, betel leaves\, betel nuts and coins in the palms of the brother and pour water on it while chanting mantras. Once this is done\, a Kalawa is tied on the wrist of the brother and the aarti is performed. DESCRIPTION:Significance and History \nThe rituals surrounding Chhath Puja are supposedly harsher when compared to other Hindu festivals. They involve strict fasting (without water)\, taking a dip in rivers/water bodies\, standing in water and offering prayers\, facing the sun for a prolonged period\, and offering ‘prasad’ to the Sun during sunrise and sunset. DESCRIPTION:Significance and History \nAlso known as ‘Tripuri Purnima‘ or ‘Tripurari Purnima‘\, the festival is a celebration of Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon\, Tripurasara. This festival is also celebrated in honour of Lord Vishnu. On this day\, he had incarnated as Matsya\, which is his very first avatar. \nThe Hindu legend says that on this day\, Gods had descended to the earth into the sacred rivers. This is why\, during Kartik Purnima\, the devotees bathe themselves in sacred rivers\, and believe that they receive the blessings of Gods. \nThe significance of this festival increases when it falls in the Nakshatra Krittika (lunar mansion).
